Chair in Computational Genomics

The rapid development of genome sequencing technologies is causing a revolution in health care and agribusiness for genetic improvement. Genome sequencing allows to catalog all the genetic variants of individuals, which encode their predisposition to certain diseases, response to treatments, possible intolerances to food and medicine, etc. However, the potential of this technology, which is the production of large volumes of data, is also an obstacle to its massive usage. The processing of these data is slow and inefficient, and their interpretation is very complex: processing a single genome involves several days of computation in high-end systems. Thus, sequencing technologies are applicable only in research or very specific clinical cases.

Chair goals

Bull EspaƱa

BULL's Chair in Computational Genomics aims to provide tools for managing and turning such data into useful information for clinicians as fast as possible. It will work on accelerating the processing algorithms of genomic data, in order to make them compatible with the times required for diagnostic and global clinical application. The main focus will be reducing the processing time to a few hours or less, even in standard computers, applying High Performance Computing technologies. The Chair combines BULL experience in High Performance Computing with CIPF knowledge in genomics.

As a result, genomics will take their first true step to be routinely used in the clinical field, opening the door to really personalized medicine. It is a crucial contribution that will implement all the possibilities of genomic sequencing applications we have imagined but were not able to exploit.

BULL expertise

This revolutionary change sets new challenges where Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) play a pivotal role by acting as change sponsors. The problems that this new health model will pose are related with acquisition, validation, standardization, storage, mining, integration, anonimization, access and finally, modeling of the billions of bytes that each patient will provide to the health system.

BULL, ICT Leader Company already provides solutions for each of the problems that will appear in the transition to the new Health System. BULL’s professionals are already working in the construction of a technological solid scaffold that will allow this new paradigm being a reality in Spain in few years. BULL will act as a catalyzer in this transition, guaranteeing pioneer solutions that will bring the P4 medicine closer to the goal of empowering a sustainable health model: (1) based on wellness and (2) that could face the demands of an ageing population.

How will it be done?

In order to fulfill the objectives set out in the agreement between CIPF and BULL, signed on 22th May 2012, the Chair will comprise the following activities:
  • Hiring a programmer to perform the development tasks to fulfill the objectives.
  • Organizing a session to deliver the results.
  • Other diffusion activities such as technical publications and presentation of results at conferences.
  • Participating in consortia with the same aim as the Chair.
